The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrival in Kowloon: harbourfront and night market
Arrival in Hong Kong
Hotel check-in
Tsim Sha Tsui sits right on the harbour, is served by two MTR lines and is a ten-minute walk from the promenade.
Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade
From the waterfront walk between the Clock Tower and the Avenue of Stars you can watch the "Symphony of Lights" laser show over the Hong Kong Island skyline at 20:00.
Day 2Victoria Peak, Central and Sheung Wan
Victoria Peak
The Peak Tram crawls up the slope in seven minutes; from the Sky Terrace above the Peak Tower the wall of skyscrapers and the harbour lie entirely below you.
Hong Kong Park
Green terraces right among the bank towers, with a walk-through aviary and the city's oldest colonial building, Flagstaff House, with its collection of tea ware.
Man Mo Temple
An 1847 temple on Hollywood Road, where huge incense coils hang from the ceiling and the air is blue with smoke.
Tai Kwun
The former Central Police Station and prison is now a courtyard full of galleries; in the cell block, exhibitions tell the city's colonial history.
Central–Mid-Levels Escalator
The 800-metre chain of escalators carries you uphill past the bars and food stalls of the SoHo lanes — in the afternoon it runs uphill.
Evening: Lan Kwai Fong
From eight o'clock the sloping lanes above D'Aguilar Street fill with after-work crowds, open-fronted bars and Hong Kong craft beer.
Day 3Lantau: Big Buddha and Tai O
Ngong Ping 360 cable car
25 minutes by gondola from Tung Chung over the bay and the mountain ridge — in the glass-floored Crystal Cabin you see the airport island beneath your feet.
Tian Tan Buddha
268 steps lead up to the 34-metre bronze figure on the hill; at the top you walk around the base and look out over Lantau's forested ridges.
Po Lin Monastery
The monastery complex opposite the Buddha, with its Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas, is still a working monastery — incense burns all day in the forecourt.
Tai O fishing village
In the stilt-house village on the western tip, salted fish and shrimp paste hang out to dry; small boats leave from the jetty in search of pink dolphins.
Evening: Knutsford Terrace
The short terraced lane above Kimberley Road in Tsim Sha Tsui is Kowloon's quieter answer to Lan Kwai Fong, with tables under the open sky.
Day 4Mong Kok's markets and departure
Flower Market and Yuen Po Street Bird Garden
In the morning Flower Market Road is packed with orchids and little kumquat trees, and at the end old men sit with their songbirds in bamboo cages in the bird garden.
Ladies' Market, Mong Kok
A kilometre of stalls on Tung Choi Street selling textiles, phone accessories and souvenirs — start haggling at half the first price.
