The route on the map

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Arrival in Porto: Ribeira and the bridge by night

    1. Arrival in Porto

    2. Hotel check-in

The Ribeira below the cathedral is the oldest part of Porto: narrow stepped lanes, everything within walking distance, and São Bento metro station five minutes uphill.

    3. Cais da Ribeira

The quayside in front of the narrow, colourful house fronts, where the flat-bottomed rabelo boats moor that once brought the port casks down from the valley.

    4. Evening: Jardim do Morro

The grassy hill at the Gaia end of the Ponte Luís I, where half of Porto sits in the evening with a can of beer and a guitar, looking across at the illuminated old town.

  2. Day 2Port wine cellars in Gaia and Porto's old town

    1. Livraria Lello

The neo-Gothic bookshop of 1906 with its curving red wooden staircase and painted glass ceiling — the entry fee is deducted if you buy a book.

    2. São Bento station

In the ticket hall around 20,000 blue-and-white azulejos by Jorge Colaço depict the battles and harvest festivals of northern Portugal.

    3. Mercado do Bolhão

The two-storey market hall reopened in 2022, with stalls selling bacalhau, sausage from Trás-os-Montes and Queijo da Serra.

    4. Ponte Dom Luís I

On the upper deck of this 1886 bridge by a pupil of Eiffel you walk across to Gaia 60 metres above the Douro, alongside the metro.

    5. Taylor's Port cellars

A tour of the cool storage cellars with their great oak casks, ending with a comparison of tawny and Late Bottled Vintage on the terrace above the city.

    6. Miradouro da Serra do Pilar

From the round monastery on the Gaia side you get the one view that fits the bridge, the Ribeira and the river into a single shot.

    7. Evening: Rua Galeria de Paris

Two streets full of small bars in old haberdashery shops — from ten o'clock the crowd stands on the cobbles, glass in hand.

  3. Day 3By the Linha do Douro to Pinhão

    1. Onward to Pinhão

    2. Hotel check-in

    3. Pinhão station

The small platform is clad in 24 azulejo panels from 1937 depicting the grape harvest, treading festivals and the rabelo boats in the valley.

    4. Quinta do Bomfim

Symington's estate just above the station — a tour of the old granite lagares and a tasting of vintage port looking out over the terraces.

    5. Quinta das Carvalhas

On the other side of the river an open-top off-road vehicle climbs the hairpins to the ridge, from where you look into both loops of the valley at once.

    6. Evening: Cais do Pinhão

The short riverside path by the landing stage, where the excursion boats lie empty in the evening and the vineyards opposite slowly fade into darkness.

  4. Day 4Quintas, hill villages and the great viewpoints

    1. Miradouro de Casal de Loivos

From the edge of the village 300 metres above the river, in the morning you see the famous double bend of the Douro at Pinhão still lying in the haze.

    2. Favaios — Museu do Pão e do Vinho

In its old bakehouse the village museum shows Favaios's four-cornered bread and pours the sweet Moscatel found only here to go with it.

    3. Provesende

A granite village with 18th-century houses bearing coats of arms around a fountain square, plus a wood-fired bakery that still fires up every morning.

    4. Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

An 18th-century estate with waymarked trails through the vine terraces and a tasting of the Grainha wines in the old press house.

    5. Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura

The rocky outcrop celebrated by Miguel Torga in his poem — from here the late-afternoon view stretches over four bends of the valley.

    6. Evening: Peso da Régua riverside promenade

The broad quay below the wine authority building, where the river boats moor in the evening and the railway bridge is floodlit.

  5. Day 5Back to Porto and departure

    1. Onward to Porto

    2. Hotel check-in

    3. Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

Terraced gardens with camellias, free-roaming peacocks and a balcony from which you can see the river mouth all the way to the Atlantic.

    4. Rua das Flores

The pedestrian street between São Bento and the Ribeira, with tinned-fish shops, soap makers and the Baroque façade of the Misericórdia — good for last-minute souvenirs.

    5. Departure from Porto
