The route on the map

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Arrival on the harbour: Potts Point

    1. Arrival in Sydney

    2. Hotel check-in

Potts Point sits on the hill above the harbour: Victorian terraces, plane trees and cafés, and the train from the airport stops right at Kings Cross Station.

    3. Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf

The longest timber wharf in the world, now a hotel and a row of restaurants, with views across the naval basin back to the illuminated city.

  2. Day 2Opera House, Bridge & The Rocks

    1. Sydney Opera House

Utzon's shell roof of more than a million tiles — outside, you walk all the way round it on Bennelong Point; inside, hourly tours take you through the Concert Hall.

    2. Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

The garden stretches along the water to Mrs Macquarie's Chair, where the classic view brings the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge together.

    3. The Rocks

The city's oldest quarter, with sandstone lanes, the Argyle Cut and Sydney's oldest pubs right beneath the bridge pylon.

    4. Pylon Lookout, Harbour Bridge

Two hundred steps inside the south-eastern pylon lead to a viewing platform above the roadway — the same view as the BridgeClimb, without a harness.

    5. Barangaroo Reserve

A shoreline rebuilt from sandstone blocks on the site of an old container port, with a waterfront path and views of Balmain.

    6. Evening: Opera Bar

The terrace beneath the Opera House steps, with live music in the evening and the Harbour Bridge directly opposite.

  3. Day 3Bondi & the coastal walk to Coogee

    1. Bondi Beach

The one-kilometre curve of sand with two lifeguard towers; in the morning the beach belongs to the swimmers and the skate park at the northern end to the kids.

    2. Bondi Icebergs Pool

The ocean pool at the southern end, washed over by waves when the sea is rough — entry for a small fee, and don't forget your towel.

    3. Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

Six kilometres of clifftop path via Tamarama, Bronte and Waverley Cemetery, always with the open Pacific on your left.

    4. Coogee Beach

The shallow, sheltered bay at the end of the walk, good for swimming and with views of little Wedding Cake Island.

    5. Wylie's Baths

A 1907 wooden ocean bath on stilts above the rocks south of Coogee, with a terrace for watching the sunset.

    6. Evening: Coogee Beach promenade

The palm-lined promenade with fish-and-chip shops, busy in the evening with people lingering by the water after a swim.

  4. Day 4Inner West: Glebe & Newtown

    1. Sydney Fish Market

The largest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere: an auction hall, oyster bars and traders shucking Sydney rock oysters right at the counter.

    2. Glebe Point Road

A street full of second-hand bookshops, thrift stores and old pubs, running down from Broadway to the water.

    3. University of Sydney Quadrangle

A neo-Gothic sandstone courtyard with gargoyles and cloisters that looks more like Oxford than Australia.

    4. King Street, Newtown

Two kilometres of unbroken shopfronts, with record stores, murals and the famous "I have a dream" mural on the corner of Lennox Street.

    5. Camperdown Memorial Rest Park

The lawn behind St Stephen's Church, half old cemetery, half dog park, where half of Newtown gathers in the afternoon.

    6. Evening: Enmore Road

Newtown's westward continuation, with the Enmore Theatre, bars and late-night kitchens open well into the night.

  5. Day 5Blue Mountains: Three Sisters & Scenic World

    1. Onward to Katoomba

    2. Hotel check-in

    3. Echo Point & Three Sisters

The three sandstone pinnacles above the Jamison Valley, seen from the lookout balcony with views as far as Mount Solitary in the haze.

    4. Giant Stairway & Federal Pass

Nine hundred steps cut into the rock lead past the Three Sisters down into the rainforest on the valley floor.

    5. Scenic World Katoomba

The steepest railway in the world, plus a cableway and the glass-floored Skyway over the Katoomba Falls gorge.

    6. Katoomba Cascades

A short waterfall in the fern forest above Katoomba Falls, ten minutes from the car park and usually deserted.

    7. Evening: Katoomba Street

The main street with Art Deco façades, a bookshop and mountain air, where pubs and an old cinema are open in the evening.

  6. Day 6Back to the sea: Manly

    1. Onward to Sydney

    2. Hotel check-in

    3. Manly Beach

A broad surf beach behind a row of Norfolk Island pines, where Australia's first surf schools began.

    4. Shelly Beach

A sheltered cove ten minutes' walk to the south, a marine reserve and the best snorkelling spot within the city.

    5. North Head Lookout

From the Fairfax Walk loop on the headland you can see the entire harbour entrance and, when the air is clear, the skyline beyond.

    6. The Corso, Manly

The pedestrian street between the ferry wharf and the beach, with buskers, ice-cream parlours and surf shops.

    7. Evening: Manly Wharf

The wharf on the harbour side, where you sit with a drink and watch the last ferries leave for Circular Quay.

  7. Day 7Art, Hyde Park & departure

    1. Art Gallery of New South Wales

Australian landscape painting and the Yiribana Gallery of First Nations art, plus the underground new building in the old oil tank.

    2. Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park

The Art Deco building at the southern end of Hyde Park, with its Hall of Silence and 120,000 golden stars in the dome, one for each volunteer from New South Wales.

    3. Departure from Sydney
