The plan, day by day
Day 1Arriving in Bergen
Arrival in Bergen
Hotel check-in
Around the Vågen you stay between the fish market and Bryggen, and everything else in Bergen is within walking distance from here.
Bryggen
The leaning wooden façades of the Hanseatic merchants and the narrow timber passages behind them, now home to workshops and small shops.
Evening: Fløyen above the city
The funicular runs until 11 pm up to 320 metres, from where you see the harbour, the islands and the seven mountains in the evening light.
Day 2Bergen between Bryggen and Ulriken
Fish market on the Vågen
At the head of the harbour king crab, salmon and whale meat are sold, and inside the market hall you can have it all cooked on the spot.
Bryggens Museum
Built over the foundations of the medieval town, the museum shows leather shoes, rune sticks and ship planks from the fire debris of 1170.
Håkon's Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower
King Håkon's banqueting hall of 1261 and the residential tower beside it stand on the Bergenhus headland at the harbour entrance.
Ulriken 643
The cable car climbs in seven minutes to the highest of the seven mountains; at the top a boardwalk crosses the upland bog with views out to the open sea.
Evening: Nordnesparken
The park on the tip of the peninsula faces west, and in the evening the fjord ships sail right past your bench.
Day 3By the Flåm Railway to the Aurlandsfjord
Onward to Flåm
Hotel check-in
Aurlandsfjord quay in Flåm
The fjord ships moor at the quay, and behind it the walls of the Aurlandsfjord rise almost vertically from the water.
Otternes Bygdetun
A cluster of 27 old wooden houses on a terrace above the fjord, inhabited until the 1990s and now an open-air museum with guided tours.
Stegastein viewpoint
The wooden ramp on the Aurlandsvegen juts 30 metres out from the slope and ends in a glass wall 650 metres above the fjord.
Evening: Flåm harbour promenade
The waterfront path between the station and the boat landing, where in the evening only the mountain walls catch the last of the light.
Day 4Nærøyfjord and a waterfall walk
Nærøyfjord boat trip to Gudvangen
Two hours through Europe's narrowest fjord arm, in places less than 300 metres wide, with waterfalls right beside the railing.
Njardarheimr Viking village
A reconstructed Viking village at the end of the fjord, where costumed residents demonstrate archery, blacksmithing and wool weaving.
Brekkefossen hike
A steep path of stone steps leads up to the waterfall in 45 minutes, and from its lookout all of Flåm and the fjord lie below you.
Flåm Railway Museum
The old station building houses locomotives and tools from the 20 years it took to build the line, much of it driven into the rock by hand.
Evening: riverside path along the Flåmselvi
The path follows the salmon river to the old church, and in the evening anglers often stand knee-deep in the clear water.
Day 5Across the fjords to Geiranger
Onward to Geiranger
Hotel check-in
Norsk Fjordsenter
The fjord centre uses models and films to explain how glaciers carved out the fjord and what a rockslide at Åkerneset would trigger.
Fossevandring at the Storfossen
A staircase of 327 steps climbs beside the roaring waterfall at the fjord centre, and at the top you stand on a platform in the spray.
Geiranger Kirke
The octagonal wooden church of 1842 stands on a rise above the village, and from the churchyard the view runs all the way down the fjord.
Evening: Geiranger fjord quay
Once the cruise ships have left, the quay falls quiet and the cliffs cast the last light onto the water.
Day 6Dalsnibba and Storseterfossen
Flydalsjuvet
The rocky ledge above the road to Stryn gives you the view of Geiranger, the fjord and the ships familiar from every postcard.
Dalsnibba Geiranger Skywalk
At 1500 metres the toll road ends at a platform from which the fjord lies 1.5 kilometres below like a blue ribbon.
Storseterfossen hike
From the Westerås farm the path climbs in a good hour to the waterfall, behind whose curtain you can walk along a rock ledge.
Evening: Ørnesvingen
The highest of the eleven Eagle Road hairpins, with a platform above the fjord facing the Brudesløret waterfall; in the evening hardly anyone drives up.
Day 7Art Nouveau in Ålesund
Onward to Ålesund
Hotel check-in
Jugendstilsenteret
In a preserved pharmacy from 1907, the centre shows how the town was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style in just three years after the great fire of 1904.
Brosundet canal
The narrow waterway through the middle of town, lined closely by old warehouses and fishing boats.
Aksla steps to Fjellstua
418 steps up through the town park to the viewpoint, from which the town's turrets lie among the islands of the Sunnmøre coast.
Evening: Molovegen by the harbour
The waterfront street with converted warehouses where the town's bars and beer pubs are open in the evening.
Day 8A last look at the Sunnmøre coast
Sunnmøre Museum
On the Borgundfjord stand 50 relocated wooden houses and replicas of old fishing boats, plus the excavations of the medieval trading town of Borgund.
Ålesund Kirke
The stone church of 1909 is painted throughout inside, and the dome mosaic above the altar shows Christ in the glow of Nordic colours.
Departure from Ålesund
