The route on the map

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Arriving at Beau Vallon

    1. Arrival in Mahé

    2. Hotel check-in

A base at Beau Vallon in the north-west of Mahé: the island's liveliest stretch of beach, with a supermarket, bus stop and a dozen places to eat within walking distance.

    3. Beau Vallon Beach

Walk barefoot along the kilometres-long arc of sand as the lights of the fishing boats come on off Silhouette Island.

  2. Day 2Victoria: market, temple and marina

    1. Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market

The covered market hall from 1840 with displays of paperfish, cinnamon bark, vanilla pods and chilli paste — busiest in the morning.

    2. Victoria Clock Tower

The silver Little Ben replica from 1903 at the main crossroads, landmark of one of the smallest capitals in the world.

    3. Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple

The colourful Hindu temple with its tiered gopuram in the middle of Victoria; shoes stay at the door.

    4. Victoria Botanical Gardens

Six hectares on Mont Fleuri with coco de mer palms, an enclosure for Aldabra giant tortoises and a noisy fruit bat colony in the treetops.

    5. Eden Island Marina

Reclaimed marina island off Victoria: jetties full of sailing yachts, a promenade and views back to the mountains of Mahé.

    6. Kenwyn House

The white colonial house from 1855 with a shingle roof and veranda, now a jeweller's — the finest surviving town house in Victoria.

    7. Evening: Eden Island Boardwalk

The marina's waterfront promenade, the island's most dependable spot for a drink after sunset.

  3. Day 3The south of Mahé

    1. Mission Lodge Venn's Town

The ruins of a mission school for freed slave children high above the west coast, with a viewing pavilion looking over the rainforest to the sea.

    2. Anse Soleil

Small bay at the end of a steep side road, with granite rocks at both ends and calm water for snorkelling.

    3. Anse Intendance

The widest undeveloped beach in the south, with powerful surf during the south-east monsoon — a place to marvel, not to swim far out.

    4. Jardin du Roi Spice Garden

A plantation from 1772 on the hillside above Anse Royale, where vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper grow along a signposted circular trail.

    5. Takamaka Bay Rum Distillery

A tour of the distillery in the La Plaine Saint André manor house from 1792, ending with a tasting of the rums.

    6. Evening: Baobab Pizzeria at Beau Vallon

Wood-fired pizza at plastic tables right on the sand — the laid-back meeting point on the north beach once it gets dark.

  4. Day 4Ferry to Praslin and Vallée de Mai

    1. Onward to Praslin

    2. Hotel check-in

    3. Vallée de Mai

World Heritage palm forest with the largest seeds in the plant kingdom: the coco de mer grows wild only here and on Curieuse.

    4. Anse Volbert (Côte d'Or)

Praslin's long, gently shelving main beach with views of Chauve-Souris Island, good for swimming whatever the wind.

    5. Anse Possession

Quiet strip of shore on the north coast opposite Curieuse, with seagrass meadows where turtles regularly graze.

    6. Evening: Côte d'Or beach promenade

The lit path behind the beach, lined with bars, a gelateria and souvenir stalls.

  5. Day 5Praslin's dream bays

    1. Anse Lazio

The picture-postcard bay in the north: pale sand between rounded granite boulders, takamaka trees for shade and clear water without currents.

    2. Anse Georgette

Semicircular bay within the grounds of Constance Lémuria — open to the public, but you should register at the gate the day before.

    3. Anse Kerlan

Wide western beach looking out to Cousin and Cousine; in the evening the best side of Praslin for the sunset.

    4. Grand Anse (Praslin)

The three-kilometre southern beach in front of the village, shallow and full of seagrass at low tide, but with boats, a bakery and real island life.

    5. Evening: bar at the Berjaya Praslin Beach Hotel

Open-air hotel bar on Grand Anse where non-guests also sit; one of the few places on Praslin with music after ten.

  6. Day 6Crossing to La Digue

    1. Onward to La Digue

    2. Hotel check-in

    3. L'Union Estate

Old coconut and vanilla plantation with an ox-driven mill, the first settlers' cemetery and a giant tortoise enclosure; the ticket also covers beach access.

    4. Anse Source d'Argent

One of the most photographed beaches in the world: shallow water behind the reef, dotted with smooth-worn granite boulders — still free of the big crowds in the morning.

    5. Veuve Nature Reserve

Small forest reserve in the island's interior, the last refuge of the black Seychelles paradise flycatcher; a ranger points out the nests.

    6. Anse Sévère

Quiet northern beach ten minutes by bike from La Passe, with coral blocks just off the shore and good snorkelling water.

    7. Evening: La Passe harbour road

The only street with any life after sunset: bikes without lights, a few bars and takeaway windows serving grilled fish.

  7. Day 7La Digue: summit and east coast

    1. Nid d'Aigle

The climb to the island's highest point at 333 metres; the last stretch is steep, and at the top La Digue lies before you with Praslin and Félicité in view.

    2. Grand Anse (La Digue)

Wide beach on the south-east coast with strong surf and undertow — swim only when the sea is calm and never alone.

    3. Petite Anse

Twenty minutes further along the rocky path: a sheltered bay with no road, no kiosk and usually hardly anyone around.

    4. Anse Cocos

At the end of the coastal path the water collects in a natural rock pool where you can swim safely.

    5. Anse Patates

Tiny bay at the northern tip with the island's most rounded granite boulders, good for a last swim before dinner.

    6. Evening: bar at Domaine de L'Orangeraie

The resort's terrace bar above La Passe, from which you can see the lights of Praslin across the water.

  8. Day 8Last morning on La Digue and departure

    1. Anse Réunion

The beach just south of La Passe, shallow and calm — the easiest place for a last swim before the ferry.

    2. Boutiques on La Passe's main street

Between the pier and the church, shops line up selling vanilla pods, cinnamon, coconut oil and batik fabrics — the last souvenirs before you leave.

    3. Departure from the Seychelles
