The plan, day by day
Day 1Settling into the Old Town
Arrival in Naples
Hotel check-in
Base yourself around Piazza Bellini in the Centro Storico: student bars under palm trees, the ancient city wall set into the ground and a two-minute walk to Via dei Tribunali.
Spaccanapoli
The dead-straight street that slices through the Old Town: Baroque façades, balconies strung with washing lines and a candlelit shrine every ten metres.
Piazza del Gesù Nuovo
In front of the church with its pyramid-studded diamond-point façade stands the Guglia dell'Immacolata, at whose base half of Naples meets in the evening.
Via San Gregorio Armeno
The street of nativity scenes: workshops open all year round where terracotta figures are shaped and painted, from shepherds to today's football stars.
Evening: Piazza Bellini
Outdoor tables around the excavated Greek city wall, with a glass of Falanghina and music drifting from the bars on the square.
Day 2Antiquity above and below the city
Museo Archeologico Nazionale
Home to the originals from Pompeii and Herculaneum: the Alexander Mosaic from the Casa del Fauno, the bronzes from the Villa dei Papiri and the Gabinetto Segreto.
Cappella Sansevero
Giuseppe Sanmartino's "Cristo velato" lies beneath a marble veil that looks like wet cloth — plus the anatomical models in the basement.
Napoli Sotterranea
Forty metres below Via dei Tribunali, the route leads through Greek quarries, Roman aqueducts and Second World War air-raid shelters.
Chiostro di Santa Chiara
The cloister with majolica-covered pillars and benches: vines, lemons and country scenes on yellow-and-blue 18th-century tiles.
Duomo di Napoli
The Cappella del Tesoro holds the blood ampoules of the city's patron saint, San Gennaro, while next door the early Christian baptistery opens up with its gold mosaics.
Evening: Via Toledo
The shopping street between Piazza Trieste e Trento and Piazza Dante, full of strollers in the evening — along the way is Toledo metro station with its blue mosaic shaft.
Day 3Pompeii and Vesuvius
Pompeii excavations: Forum and baths
From the Forum, with Vesuvius as a backdrop, you head into the Terme Stabiane, where stucco ceilings, changing-room niches and warm-water pools survive.
Casa dei Vettii and Via dell'Abbondanza
The newly restored house of two freedmen shows the most colourful frescoes in the city; outside, the main street runs past bakeries and election slogans on the walls.
Amphitheatre of Pompeii
The oldest surviving stone amphitheatre in the Roman world, next to the Great Palaestra with the casts of the fleeing victims in the Orto dei Fuggiaschi.
Vesuvius – Gran Cono
From Quota 1000 a gravel path leads in a good 25 minutes to the crater rim, where steam rises from the fissures and the view stretches across the whole bay.
Evening: Lungomare Caracciolo
Car-free seafront promenade between Castel dell'Ovo and Mergellina — after dark, the dark outline of Vesuvius, which you climbed in the afternoon, rises opposite.
Day 4View over the bay and farewell
Certosa e Museo di San Martino
Take the funicular up to Vomero: a charterhouse with a Baroque church, a nativity-scene collection and a balcony terrace with the whole city spread out below as far as Vesuvius.
Castel dell'Ovo and Borgo Marinari
The fortress on its little tuff island is free to enter; below lies the fishing harbour with sailing boats and restaurant tables right by the water.
