The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrival and a first walk through the Innere Stadt
Arrival in Vienna
Hotel check-in
Base yourself in the Innere Stadt between Kärntner Straße and Stephansplatz, from where almost everything is within walking distance for all four days.
St Stephen's Cathedral
The Gothic cathedral with its patterned tiled roof; in the south tower, 343 steps lead up to the watchman's room with views over the entire old town.
Kärntner Straße and Graben
A stroll from the cathedral along the Graben with its Baroque Plague Column to the Kohlmarkt, past Demel and the shop windows of the old purveyors to the imperial court.
Evening: Bermuda Triangle
The cluster of lanes around Ruprechtskirche and Seitenstettengasse, where small bars and Beisln stay open late.
Day 2Schönbrunn — palace, park and zoo
Schönbrunn Palace
The Grand Tour takes you through 40 rooms of the summer residence, from the Hall of Mirrors to the Millions Room with its Indian miniatures.
Gloriette in the palace park
The climb across the lawn to the arcaded hall on the hill, whose terrace overlooks the palace, the park and the city beyond.
Tiergarten Schönbrunn
The world's oldest zoo still in operation, dating from 1752, with Baroque pavilions at its centre and giant pandas.
Imperial Carriage Museum
The former winter riding school houses the court's state carriages, including the Imperial Coach and Sisi's black mourning carriage.
Naschmarkt
The long market strip along the Wienzeile with spice, cheese and olive stalls, and the Otto Wagner buildings on the corner of Köstlergasse.
Evening: Freihausviertel
Schleifmühlgasse and the lanes behind it, with small galleries, wine bars and bars that stay busy late into the night.
Day 3Museums on the Ring and imperial apartments
Kunsthistorisches Museum
Bruegel's Peasant Wedding and The Tower of Babel hang here in a room of their own, alongside Vermeer, Velázquez and the Kunstkammer with the Saliera.
Hofburg and the Imperial Apartments
The tour leads through the Silver Collection, the Sisi Museum and Franz Joseph's living quarters with his narrow iron bed.
Albertina
Dürer's Young Hare and the Habsburg state rooms on the upper floor, plus the permanent collection from Monet to Picasso.
Leopold Museum
The world's largest Schiele collection in the white limestone cube of the MuseumsQuartier, along with Klimt and the Wiener Werkstätte.
Vienna State Opera
The 45-minute guided tour takes you up the grand staircase into the auditorium, the Tea Salon and backstage.
Evening: Rathausplatz and the Ring by night
The illuminated Ringstraße between the City Hall, the Burgtheater and Parliament, with stalls in front of the City Hall depending on the season.
Day 4Belvedere, Karlsplatz and farewell
Upper Belvedere
In Prince Eugene's palace, Klimt's The Kiss hangs in the Marble Hall wing, and from the windows the view stretches across the Baroque garden to St Stephen's Cathedral.
Karlskirche
Fischer von Erlach's domed church with its two relief columns; a lift takes you up into the dome, close beneath Rottmayr's fresco.
