The route on the map

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Arrival & Old Town

    1. Arrival in Prague

    2. Hotel check-in

Your base is in the New Town between Wenceslas Square and Národní třída, from where the Old Town is a ten-minute walk.

    3. Old Town Square

On the hour the Astronomical Clock strikes on the Town Hall, while opposite stand the twin-towered Týn Church and the Jan Hus Memorial.

    4. Charles Bridge

Thirty Baroque statues of saints line this stone bridge of 1357, beneath which the Vltava flows between the Old Town and Lesser Town bridge towers.

    5. Kampa Island

Below the bridge steps lies this quiet island with the water wheel of the Grand Prior's Mill, old townhouses and a meadow right by the water.

    6. Evening: Náplavka riverside promenade

Along Rašín Embankment, wine bars and boat pubs fill the vaults of the quay wall, with views of the illuminated Castle across the river in the evening.

  2. Day 2Castle, Hradčany & Lesser Town

    1. Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral

Europe's largest castle complex, where the Gothic St Vitus Cathedral with its Mucha window, the Old Royal Palace with Vladislav Hall and St George's Basilica are grouped around three courtyards.

    2. Golden Lane

The tiny colourful cottages against the castle wall once housed the castle marksmen; Franz Kafka wrote at number 22, and the battlement walkway with suits of armour runs above.

    3. Strahov Monastery

The Philosophical and Theological Halls of the Premonstratensian library are crammed with books, ceiling frescoes and old globes, and in front of the monastery you look out over the whole city.

    4. Petřín Lookout Tower

This 63.5-metre steel tower of 1891 is a little Eiffel Tower, whose 299 steps lead to a panoramic view over the Vltava, the Old Town and the Castle.

    5. Lesser Town Square

The square is divided by the Baroque St Nicholas Church with its green dome, surrounded by the arcades and palaces of the Lesser Town.

    6. Lennon Wall

Since the 1980s, the wall on Grand Priory Square has been sprayed over again and again with Beatles lyrics and peace slogans.

    7. Evening: U Fleků beer hall

This brewery dating from 1499 serves only a dark lager, at long tables in the vaults and in the courtyard, where a brass band plays in the evening.

  3. Day 3Josefov & departure

    1. Josefov and the Old Jewish Cemetery

In the former ghetto stand the Gothic Old-New Synagogue of 1270, the Pinkas Synagogue with the names of the 78,000 murdered, and the cemetery with twelve thousand leaning gravestones.

    2. Powder Tower and Municipal House

The black Gothic city gate tower on Republic Square stands right next to the Art Nouveau Municipal House with its Smetana Hall.

    3. Departure from Prague
