The plan, day by day
Day 1Settling in between harbour and old town
Arrival in Copenhagen
Hotel check-in
Base yourself in Vesterbro behind the Central Station, a neighbourhood of old meatpacking halls, cafés and Sønder Boulevard, from where everything is within reach on foot or by bike.
Nyhavn
The old sailing canal lined with ochre and red merchants' houses; Hans Christian Andersen lived at number 20.
Strøget
Europe's oldest pedestrian street, running from City Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv, with the Danish design houses Illums Bolighus and Georg Jensen on Amagertorv.
Rundetårn
The Round Tower of 1642, whose cobbled spiral ramp — without a single step — leads to a viewing platform above the copper roofs of the old town.
Evening: Tivoli
The pleasure gardens of 1843 in the evening, when lanterns glow above the flowerbeds and the wooden roller coaster rattles between the pavilions.
Day 2Danish design and the royal quarter
Kastellet
The fully preserved star fort of 1664 with ramparts, moat and the red row of soldiers' barracks, almost exclusively frequented by joggers in the morning.
The Little Mermaid
Edvard Eriksen's small bronze mermaid of 1913 on her boulder by the Langelinie promenade, barely bigger than a child.
Designmuseum Danmark
In the Rococo building of the former Frederik's Hospital is the corridor of a hundred Danish chairs — Wegner, Jacobsen, Juhl — along with Poulsen's lamps and the porcelain collection.
Amalienborg
Four identical Rococo palaces around an octagonal square; at noon the Royal Life Guards in bearskin hats march in for the changing of the guard.
Rosenborg Slot
Christian IV's pleasure palace in its Renaissance garden; in the basement, the Danish crown jewels lie behind armoured glass.
Torvehallerne
Two glass market halls on Israels Plads with fish counters, cheese, smørrebrød and coffee roasters — the city centre's larder.
Evening: Jægersborggade
The short street in Nørrebro with wine bars, ceramics workshops and Coffee Collective, where half the neighbourhood sits on the kerb in the evening.
Day 3Harbourfront, cycle bridge and departure
Christianshavns Kanal
The broad canal with moored wooden boats and the warehouses of Wilders Plads, laid out as Christian IV's Dutch-planned harbour town.
Islands Brygge Havnebad
The harbour bath by BIG and JDS right in the clean harbour water, backed by the lawn where half of Copenhagen lies in summer.
Cykelslangen
The curving orange cycle bridge that glides above the harbour basin from Fisketorvet to Brygge — bikes only, pedestrians have to stay below.
Departure from Copenhagen
