The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrive and saddle up
Arrival in Amsterdam
Hotel check-in
Your base is in De Pijp around Gerard Douplein — narrow brick streets, the Albert Cuyp Market round the corner and cafés with pavement tables everywhere.
MacBike Leidseplein
Pick up your black Dutch bike for the three days here, along with a D-lock and a city map; you can return it later at any other branch, including the one at Centraal Station.
Vondelpark
A first ride through the long city park: ponds with herons, the rose garden in the middle and the open-air theatre, where performances take place on summer afternoons.
Museumplein
The great lawn between the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw — from the shallow pool you see the Rijksmuseum's brick façade with the cycle passage beneath it.
Evening: Leidseplein
The square between the Stadsschouwburg, Paradiso and Melkweg fills up in the evening with terraces, buskers and people waiting for a concert.
Day 2Canals, the Jordaan and the view across the IJ
Anne Frank Huis
In the Secret Annexe on the Prinsengracht, the narrow rooms behind the revolving bookcase stand empty; the newspaper pictures Anne Frank put up are still stuck to the wallpaper.
Noordermarkt
The square in front of the octagonal Noorderkerk hosts a farmers' market on Saturdays and a fabric and flea market on Mondays; in between you can sit on the benches among cheese stalls and old bike parts.
Begijnhof
Behind an inconspicuous door on the Spui lies a peaceful courtyard with a lawn, one of the last two wooden houses in the city centre and two hidden churches — please keep quiet, people live here.
Bloemenmarkt
The flower market floats on pontoons on the Singel: crates of tulip bulbs, amaryllis and seed packets, with the water and the narrow gabled houses behind.
EYE Filmmuseum
Behind Centraal Station the free F3 ferry takes your bike across; on the other side stands the white angular building by the water, whose terrace overlooks the whole harbour and the skyline opposite.
Evening: Nieuwmarkt
Around the medieval Waag the terraces stay open late; from here the lanes of the Lastage and the Zeedijk lead off in every direction.
Day 3The green east by the water
Hortus Botanicus
One of Europe's oldest botanical gardens, laid out for the medicinal plants of the Dutch East India Company: palm house, butterfly greenhouse and a coffee plant older than the building next to it.
Oosterpark
The oldest landscaped park in the east, with English-style lawns, a pond full of herons and the slavery monument on its eastern edge.
De Gooyer windmill
The wooden octagonal mill of 1725 stands on a bastion by the canal; in the former bathhouse at its foot, Brouwerij 't IJ brews beer, and its terrace basks in the afternoon sun.
