The plan, day by day
Day 1Settling in around Covent Garden
Arrival in London
Hotel check-in
Bloomsbury lies between the British Museum and King's Cross station: quiet brick streets around Russell Square, ten minutes' walk from Covent Garden.
Covent Garden Market
Craft stalls line up beneath the cast-iron and glass roof of the old market hall, while buskers sing on the Piazza's lower level.
Seven Dials
A roundabout with a sundial pillar, from which seven narrow streets full of small shops and milliners radiate like a star.
Trafalgar Square
Nelson's Column, the four bronze lions and the changing sculpture on the Fourth Plinth, with the grand steps of the National Gallery behind.
Evening: Soho
Old Compton Street and Dean Street with packed pubs whose drinkers spill onto the pavement, glass in hand, plus the illuminated theatre signs on Shaftesbury Avenue.
Day 2Bloomsbury museums & the City
British Museum
From the glass-roofed Great Court, the galleries lead to the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures and the Assyrian lion-hunt reliefs.
Sir John Soane's Museum
The architect's home on Lincoln's Inn Fields is crammed to the ceiling with antiquities, including Hogarth's series of paintings behind fold-out walls.
Somerset House
A neoclassical courtyard with 55 fountains you can walk between, and a view of the Thames from the terrace.
St Paul's Cathedral
Wren's dome from the inside with the Whispering Gallery and, 528 steps up from the floor, the circuit of the Golden Gallery above the rooftops of the City.
Leadenhall Market
A Victorian market hall with burgundy cast-iron arches and gilded ornamentation, wedged between the glass towers of the City.
Evening: Sky Garden
The glazed palm house on the 35th floor of the “Walkie-Talkie”, with views of the illuminated Tower Bridge and the bends of the Thames.
Day 3Markets & the Thames in Bankside
Borough Market
Beneath the green iron girders you'll find oysters, mature Cheddar and Kappacasein's famous cheese toasties — in the morning alongside restaurant buyers.
Southwark Cathedral
London's oldest Gothic church, just behind the market, with the Shakespeare memorial and a window full of characters from his plays.
Shakespeare's Globe
The thatched reconstruction of the 1599 round theatre; the tour explains why the standing places in the yard are both the best and the least comfortable.
Tate Modern
The former power station with its vast Turbine Hall, and above it Rothko, Picasso and Bourgeois — the view from the Blavatnik Building extends across the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's.
Queen's Walk along the Thames
The riverside path heading east from Bankside, past the replica ship Golden Hinde and the brick warehouses of Butler's Wharf.
Tower Bridge
Up top, the glazed high-level walkways with a glass floor above the roadway; below, the original steam engines that once raised the bascules.
Evening: Bermondsey Street
A street of brightly painted houses, the orange Fashion and Textile Museum and pubs like the Woolpack, where the neighbourhood gathers in the evening.
Day 4Westminster & departure
Westminster Abbey
The coronation church with the Coronation Chair, the graves of Newton and Darwin and Poets' Corner in the south transept.
Buckingham Palace
From the Victoria Memorial you see the palace railings and, when the Royal Standard is flying, know that the monarch is in residence.
