The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrival in the green north
Arrival in Tenerife
Hotel check-in
A base in Puerto de la Cruz, the old resort town in the north: narrow lanes around the Plaza del Charco, the roar of the sea along the promenade and everything within ten minutes on foot.
Playa Jardín
Black lava beach below the Punta Brava castle, with lush gardens designed by César Manrique.
Evening: Plaza del Charco
The main square under old Indian laurel figs fills after dark with locals, children at play and terraces around the old fishermen's houses.
Day 2La Orotava & the gardens of Puerto de la Cruz
Jardín Botánico de Puerto de la Cruz
Botanical garden from 1788, where a 200-year-old strangler fig with intertwined aerial roots takes up half the courtyard.
Casa de los Balcones
Manor house from 1632 in La Orotava with carved Canarian balconies of resinous pine heartwood (tea) and a courtyard where calados embroidery is still made.
Iglesia de la Concepción de La Orotava
Baroque parish church with a curving twin-towered façade, its dome rising above the tiled roofs of the old town.
Jardines del Marquesado de la Quinta Roja
Terraced French-style garden crowned by a marble mausoleum, laid out on the slope above the old town, with open views down into the Orotava Valley.
Mirador de Humboldt
Viewpoint on the road to Puerto de la Cruz from which Alexander von Humboldt gazed over the valley in 1799 — banana terraces down to the sea, with the Teide behind.
Evening: Muelle Pesquero in Puerto de la Cruz
The old fishing harbour with colourful boats, the Santa Bárbara battery and tapas terraces right above the surf.
Day 3Anaga laurel forest & La Laguna
Mirador Cruz del Carmen
Gateway to the cloud forest of the Anaga Biosphere Reserve: gnarled laurel trees covered in lichen, with a view beyond over La Laguna to the Teide.
Taganana
Old hamlet in a ravine on the north coast, its white houses stacked beneath the rock pinnacles of Roque de las Ánimas.
Playa de Benijo
Wild black beach at the end of the coast road, with two rocky islets offshore — swim only when the sea is calm, as the current is strong.
La Laguna Old Town
The UNESCO-protected grid of the island's first capital, with town palaces, monastery courtyards and student bars on Calle San Agustín.
Iglesia de la Concepción de La Laguna
The island's oldest parish church with a seven-storey bell tower you can climb for a panoramic view over the rooftops.
Evening: Calle Herradores
The old town's pedestrian street, in the evening the island's liveliest strip of tapas bars and pubs, as this is where the university comes to party.
Day 4Cañadas del Teide & starry sky
Minas de San José
Ochre pumice desert just past the El Portillo park entrance, looking like a lunar landscape with the Teide as a backdrop.
Teide Cable Car to La Rambleta
An eight-minute ride from 2,356 to 3,555 metres; at the top, two short trails lead to viewpoints over the Pico Viejo rim and above the clouds as far as La Gomera.
Roques de García
Upended lava rocks in the middle of the caldera; the 3.5-kilometre circular trail passes the famous Roque Cinchado rock spire.
Mirador Llano de Ucanca
Wide, bone-dry sediment plain in the caldera where a mirror lake briefly forms after rain — the quietest spot in the park.
Mirador de Samara
Black cinder cone on the western edge of the Cañadas with a short crater loop among Canary pines and solidified lava flows.
Evening: starry sky over the Llano de Ucanca
After sunset, at 2,100 metres and with no light pollution, the Milky Way becomes visible from horizon to horizon — bring a blanket and a head torch.
Day 5West coast: Garachico, Masca, Los Gigantes
Onward to Los Gigantes
Hotel check-in
Masca mountain village
A handful of stone houses on a ridge deep in the Teno mountains, reachable only by mule track until 1991 and now the starting point for the Masca Gorge.
Castillo de San Miguel in Garachico
Squat harbour fortress from 1575, one of the few buildings to survive the 1706 lava flow that buried the town's harbour.
El Caletón natural pools
Seawater pools formed from the cooled lava of 1706, with ladders and walkways, where you can swim when the sea is calm.
Drago Milenario in Icod de los Vinos
The largest dragon tree in the Canaries, estimated at 800 to 1,000 years old, stands in a small park above the old town.
Mirador Archipenque
Viewing platform on the hairpin road with the best view of the Los Gigantes cliffs, which plunge 500 metres sheer into the sea.
Evening: Los Gigantes harbour promenade
The whale-watching boats come in to the marina in the evening; from the breakwater the cliffs stand directly opposite in the dusk.
Day 6The south and farewell
Playa de Las Vistas in Los Cristianos
Gently shelving pale sandy beach with a breakwater, where the water is calm enough for a last swim even in the morning.
Los Cristianos Harbour
Old fishing harbour from which the ferries to La Gomera depart; fishermen sell their catch on the quay in the morning, and the beach promenade begins behind it.
Departure from Tenerife
