The route on the map
The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrival in Sultanahmet
Arrival in Istanbul
Hotel check-in
Base yourself in Sultanahmet between the Hippodrome and Cankurtaran — narrow lanes, all the old town's highlights within walking distance, and the T1 tram stops at Sultanahmet Square.
Hippodrome (Sultanahmet Meydanı)
The old Byzantine racetrack, now a long square with the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column from Delphi and the Walled Obelisk.
Evening: Arasta Bazaar and Sultanahmet by night
The short shopping lane behind the Blue Mosque stays open into the evening; afterwards, stroll across the illuminated square between the mosque and Hagia Sophia.
Day 2Byzantines and Ottomans on the historic peninsula
Hagia Sophia
Justinian's domed church of 537, later a mosque, a museum and a mosque again — today visitors take the ramp up to the gallery to see the mosaics.
Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque)
Six minarets outside, and inside more than 20,000 blue-and-white İznik tiles beneath the main dome; the visitors' entrance is on the Hippodrome side.
Basilica Cistern
An underground reservoir with 336 columns and the two upside-down Medusa heads in the far corner.
Topkapı Palace
Four courtyards of the Ottoman sultans, with the Treasury, the Chamber of Holy Relics and the Harem (separate ticket); from the terrace in the fourth courtyard you see the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus at once.
Gülhane Park
The former outer palace garden, now a shady park leading downhill from the Topkapı gate to Sirkeci station and the waterfront.
Evening: Galata Bridge and the Eminönü waterfront
In the evening anglers stand shoulder to shoulder on the upper deck of the bridge, with fish restaurants lined up below — and a view back to the illuminated Süleymaniye Mosque.
Day 3Galata and Beyoğlu
Galata Tower
A Genoese defensive tower from 1348; the viewing gallery beneath its conical roof takes in the historic peninsula, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus in one sweep.
Kılıç Ali Paşa Camii in Karaköy
Sinan's late mosque of 1580, a small Hagia Sophia in its ground plan, with the restored hammam right next door.
İstiklal Caddesi
The pedestrian thoroughfare from Tünel to Taksim, with the historic red tram, arcades such as Çiçek Pasajı and the fish market on Sahne Sokak.
Pera Museum
A collection of Ottoman Orientalist painting, including Osman Hamdi Bey's “The Tortoise Trainer”, along with Kütahya ceramics and historic weights.
Çukurcuma
A steep antiques quarter below İstiklal, with junk shops and the Museum of Innocence in Orhan Pamuk's converted corner house.
Evening: Asmalımescit
A warren of lanes at the lower end of İstiklal, where in the evening the meyhane tables with meze and rakı spill out into the street and live music plays.
Day 4The Asian side: Kadıköy and Üsküdar
Kadıköy Çarşı (market quarter)
A dense web of lanes around Güneşlibahçe Sokak with fish stalls, cheese shops, spice merchants and the legendary confectioner Baylan.
Moda waterfront promenade
A quiet coastal path around the Moda headland with tea gardens by the water and views back to the Princes' Islands and the old town skyline.
Yeldeğirmeni
An old railway workers' quarter with Art Nouveau apartment blocks and large murals, interspersed with small bookshops and coffee roasters.
Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in Üsküdar
Sinan's building of 1548 right by the ferry pier, with a triple-tiered portico and a bustling square in front.
Salacak waterfront and Maiden's Tower
From the low coastal strip at Salacak, Kız Kulesi stands in the water just a few hundred metres offshore; boats leave from here for the tower.
Evening: Üsküdar waterfront at sunset
The waterfront path between the Şemsi Paşa Mosque and the pier, from where the sun sets right behind the historic peninsula.
Day 5Bosphorus shore and departure
Dolmabahçe Palace
The opulent waterfront palace of 1856, with the 4.5-tonne chandelier in the Ceremonial Hall and the room where Atatürk died in 1938.
Ortaköy and Ortaköy Mosque
A small waterfront square with the Baroque Büyük Mecidiye Mosque right beneath the first Bosphorus Bridge, plus the kumpir stalls in the lanes behind.
