The route on the map
The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrival in car-free Zermatt
Arrival in Zermatt
Hotel check-in
You stay in the village centre between the station and the Kirchbrücke, from where each of the three valley stations is a ten-minute walk away.
Bahnhofstrasse Zermatt
Electric taxis hum along the main street between the station and the church square, and in the sports shops you pick up your skis and boots for the next morning.
Day 2Sunnegga & Rothorn — the sunny side
Sunnegga
The underground funicular takes you up to 2288 m in three minutes, where the sun arrives early and the first wide runs towards Findeln begin.
Blauherd
A change-over point at 2571 m with the classic Matterhorn view across the Stellisee, and the gateway to the long Rothorn runs.
Rothorn Paradise
At 3103 m the cable car ends at a viewing terrace from which you can count forty four-thousanders before the Kin run takes you down to Gant.
Gant
Valley station in the Findelbach valley, where the runs from the Rothorn and the Gornergrat meet and the gondola climbs back up to Blauherd.
Findeln
The hamlet of black timber barns at 2050 m sits right in the middle of the piste, with the Matterhorn perfectly aligned with its lane.
Evening: Vernissage Bar
Bar, cinema and gallery in one building behind the church square — you sit between the screen and candelabras over a drink.
Day 3Gornergrat & Riffelberg
Gornergrat
The rack railway ends at 3089 m right in front of the twin-towered Kulmhotel, below which the second-largest glacier in the Alps spreads out.
Rotenboden
Station above the snow-covered Riffelsee and starting point of the long run no. 21, with the Matterhorn constantly in front of you.
Riffelberg
A wide plateau at 2582 m with broad, gentle runs and the small Bruder Klaus chapel on the edge.
Riffelalp
At 2222 m you'll find Swiss stone pine forest, an old tram carriage and Europe's highest tramway, which shuttles to the resort in winter.
Furi
Hub at 1867 m where the lifts from Schwarzsee and the glacier converge and the suspension bridge over the Gorner Gorge begins.
Evening: Elsie's Bar
A tiny bar opposite the parish church, known since the fifties for oysters, whisky and a packed bar counter.
Day 4Matterhorn Glacier Paradise & Schwarzsee
Trockener Steg
At 2939 m the gondola ends on the edge of the Theodul Glacier; this is where the cable car to the Klein Matterhorn starts, and the runs are snow-sure even in deep winter.
Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
At 3883 m the highest mountain station in the Alps, with a viewing platform above the Breithorn ridge and the ice palace dug into the glacier.
Schwarzsee
At 2583 m the chapel of Maria zum Schnee and the small frozen lake sit directly beneath the Matterhorn's north-east face, where the Hörnli route begins.
Stafelalp
A sunny alp at 2200 m below the Matterhorn's west face, passed by the quiet run 55 towards Furi.
Hennu Stall
A wooden hut in the middle of the valley run near Furi, with live music from the afternoon and skis stuck in the snow outside.
Evening: Snowboat Bar & Yacht Club
A two-storey bar on the bank of the Vispa with a sun deck and views of the illuminated village.
Day 5Over the border ridge to Cervinia
Testa Grigia
At 3480 m the national border runs right through the mountain station, the Italian side on the left, the Swiss side on the right.
Plan Maison
A sunny mid-station plateau at 2555 m above Cervinia, from which the long, gentle carving runs branch off into the Valtournenche.
Breuil-Cervinia
The Italian ski village at 2050 m, with espresso at the bar and the Matterhorn seen from its broad southern side.
Theodul Glacier
The glacier runs back to the Swiss side lead between crevasse zones and lift pylons over permanent ice down towards Trockener Steg.
Gandegghütte
An old hut at 3029 m with a sun terrace right above the icefall, the last stop before the run down to the valley.
Evening: CERVO Puro Bar
A terrace bar on the slope above the village, where you sit by the fire basket looking down on the lights of Zermatt.
Day 6Zermatt on foot & departure
Matterhorn Museum Zermatlantis
Beneath the village square an old Valais village has been recreated, at whose centre the broken rope from the 1865 first ascent of the Matterhorn lies in a display case.
Mountaineers' Cemetery
Beside the parish church of St Maurice lie the graves of those who died on the Matterhorn, many with ice axe and rope on the stone.
