The route on the map
The plan, day by day
Day 1Arriving in the glacier village
Arrival in Grindelwald
Hotel check-in
Your base is on the Dorfstrasse between the station and the church, from where both valley stations are a quarter of an hour's walk away.
Dorfstrasse Grindelwald
The village's only main street runs past sports shops and chalets, and above the rooftops the Eiger North Face rises almost vertically into view.
Grindelwald Glacier Gorge
Wooden walkways lead through the gorge carved out by the Lütschine, its walls in places just a few metres apart.
Evening: Cava Bar at the Hotel Spinne
A small bar in the middle of the village where mountain guides and guests mingle over a beer in the evening.
Day 2Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe
Grindelwald Terminal
From the large valley station at Grund, the Eiger Express glides in 15 minutes beneath the Eiger North Face up to the Eiger Glacier.
Eigergletscher station
At 2320 m the gondola ends right beside the remnant of the glacier tongue, and you change to the Jungfrau Railway, which disappears into the rock here.
Jungfraujoch – Sphinx Observation Deck
The lift takes you up to 3571 m to the terrace, with a view over the 22 km Aletsch Glacier to the four-thousanders of the Valais.
Ice Palace at the Jungfraujoch
Passages carved into the glacier with ice sculptures, where the temperature stays at around minus two degrees — the floor is as slippery as glass.
Kleine Scheidegg
This railway junction at 2061 m lies right between the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau; on warm days you can hear rockfall in the North Face from the terrace.
Evening: Avocado Bar at the Hotel Derby
A bar right opposite the station, where people back from the Joch wind down the day with a view of the floodlit face.
Day 3Lauterbrunnen Valley and Mürren
Staubbach Falls, Lauterbrunnen
The stream plunges almost 300 m freely over the valley wall and turns to spray halfway down; a short path leads behind the veil into the rock gallery.
Trümmelbach Falls
A lift and tunnel walkways lead to ten glacial waterfalls inside the mountain, thundering away with the meltwater of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
Mürren – village street
The car-free village on its rock terrace is made up of dark wooden houses, and between them the Jungfrau stands directly opposite, framed as if in a window.
Allmendhubel
The old funicular climbs to 1907 m in four minutes, where a loop trail offers alpine flowers and the full line-up of the Bernese giants.
Evening: bar at the Hotel Belvedere Grindelwald
A terrace bar at the upper edge of the village, from where the Eiger North Face looks floodlit well into dusk.
Day 4First, Bachalpsee and the slopes above the village
First – top station
The gondola from the Dorfstrasse ends at 2166 m on the sun terrace, the starting point for all the trails across the alpine pastures.
First Cliff Walk
A steel walkway hung on the rock face, with a viewing platform beneath which there is a sheer 45 m drop into nothing.
Bachalpsee
After just under an hour's walk on a wide path, the mountain lake appears, reflecting the Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn when there is no wind.
Bort
The middle station at 1570 m with alpine pasture, a playground and the hire point for the Trottibike scooters you ride back down to the valley.
Pfingstegg
A short cable car up to the terrace opposite the village, with views of the Upper Grindelwald Glacier and a 736 m summer toboggan run.
Evening: Grindelwald Sports Centre
An indoor pool and sauna in the middle of the village, open in the evening and the best place for tired legs after a day's hiking.
Day 5Männlichen and farewell
Männlichen – Royal Walk
From the top of Europe's longest gondola cableway, a 20-minute ridge path leads to the crown-shaped viewpoint at 2343 m, with a view over both valleys at once.
Grindelwald village church
The white church of 1793 stands on a hill above the main street; from the churchyard beside it you see the Eiger and Wetterhorn side by side.
Departure from Grindelwald
