4 Days in Cinque Terre

Four days based in Monterosso al Mare: a day by the sea to arrive, a stage of the Sentiero Azzurro via Vernazza to Corniglia, a day in the vineyard terraces above Manarola and Riomaggiore and a final morning in Monterosso's old town before flying home from Pisa.

The route on the map

The plan, day by day

  1. Day 1Arriving in Monterosso

    1. Arrival in the Cinque Terre

    2. Hotel check-in

Your base is in Fegina, the newer part of Monterosso right on the sandy beach and two minutes from the station, from which all the other villages can be reached.

    3. Il Gigante on the Fegina rocks

The 14-metre Neptune figure of concrete and iron from 1910 clings to the rock at the end of the beach promenade, without trident or arms since war damage and landslides.

    4. Spiaggia di Fegina

The only proper sandy beach in the Cinque Terre, half rows of sunloungers, half free section — in the afternoon the slope is in shade and the water is at its calmest.

    5. Evening: Via Roma in Monterosso

The old town's main lane between Piazza Garibaldi and the railway underpass, open in the evening with wine bars, gelaterias and focaccia counters until late into the night.

  2. Day 2Sentiero Azzurro to Vernazza and Corniglia

    1. Sentiero Azzurro from Monterosso to Vernazza

Two hours on the clifftop path over steps, vineyard terraces and holm-oak woodland, with the classic view back to Monterosso and down onto the tower of Vernazza.

    2. Castello Doria in Vernazza

The Genoese round watchtower above the harbour, open to visitors for two euros, with a panoramic view over the only natural harbour in the Cinque Terre.

    3. Chiesa di Santa Margherita d'Antiochia

A Gothic church from the 14th century whose apse stands right on the rocky edge above the water; the bell tower was originally a defensive tower.

    4. Lardarina — the staircase to Corniglia

382 brick steps in 33 turns from the station up to the only village without direct access to the sea; if you'd rather not climb, take the shuttle bus in front of the station.

    5. Terrazza Santa Maria in Corniglia

A viewing terrace at the end of Via Fieschi, a hundred metres above the water, from which on clear days you can see all five villages along the coast.

    6. Evening: Piazza Garibaldi in Monterosso

The square between the Oratorio dei Neri and the sea, where the benches fill up in the evening and the bars under the arcades pour sciacchetrà and limoncino.

  3. Day 3Vineyard terraces above Manarola and Riomaggiore

    1. Punta Bonfiglio in Manarola

The headland behind the cemetery with the picture-book view of Manarola's stacked houses — in the morning the sun is in the right place for photos.

    2. Vineyard terraces of Volastra

More than 300 steps up to the hamlet of Volastra with the pilgrimage church of Nostra Signora della Salute, surrounded by the dry-stone terraces where the grapes for sciacchetrà grow.

    3. Riomaggiore marina

The narrow boat ramp at the end of Via Colombo, where fishing boats are pulled up onto the street between the rocks — the most photographed scene on the coast.

    4. Castello di Riomaggiore

The 13th-century castle ruin above the village, now a terrace and exhibition space, from which you overlook the whole valley cut down to the sea.

    5. Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero

The mountain sanctuary 340 metres above Riomaggiore, reached via trail 593 or the small shuttle, with the widest view over the entire coastline.

    6. Evening: Via Colombo in Riomaggiore

The sloping main lane, where bars and fried-fish counters stay open late in the evening and you eat paper cones of fried fish on the kerb.

  4. Day 4Monterosso's old town and farewell

    1. Convento dei Cappuccini

A Capuchin monastery of 1622 on the hill between the old and new towns, whose church houses a Crucifixion attributed to van Dyck.

    2. Torre Aurora on the Colle San Cristoforo

The last surviving defensive tower of the village's 16th-century fortifications, on the rocky spur that separates Fegina from the old town, with views over both bays.

    3. Departure from the Cinque Terre
