The route on the map
The plan, day by day
Day 1Arriving at Lake Bled
Arrival in Bled
Hotel check-in
The area around Ljubljanska cesta above the lakeside promenade is the most convenient base: everything on the lake is within walking distance, and the bus station is five minutes away.
Lakeside path around Lake Bled
The six-kilometre, mostly flat loop runs along the water and, on the western side, reveals the classic view of the island, church tower and castle all at once.
Bled Island by pletna boat
From the jetty in Mlino a pletna boatman rows you to the island in a good 20 minutes, where you ring the wishing bell in the Church of the Assumption.
Bled Castle
On its 130-metre rock stands Slovenia's oldest castle, with a museum, a printing workshop and a terrace overlooking the whole lake and, on clear days, Triglav.
Evening: Bled lakeside promenade
The illuminated lakeside path between the Kurhaus and the boathouses is lively in the evening, and the Park café serves the original Bled cream cake until late.
Day 2Vintgar Gorge and views over Bled
Vintgar Gorge
Wooden walkways lead 1.6 kilometres through the narrow gorge of the Radovna over turquoise pools to the Šum waterfall; entry only with a time slot booked in advance.
Church of Sv. Katarina above Zasip
From the village of Zasip a short climb leads up Homberk hill to a small pilgrimage church with an open view over the Sava valley and the Karawanks.
Ojstrica viewpoint
A steep, rooty path from the western shore takes you in 20 minutes to the rocky outcrop where the lake's best-known photo, with the island in the centre, is taken.
Velika Zaka on the western shore
At the quiet western end of the lake are the rowing centre and a lawn for sunbathing, where you can hire rowing boats or swim in water at 22 degrees.
Evening: Kavarna Park in Bled
The large terrace above the promenade is open until 10 pm and is where locals and visitors alike round off the evening with a view of the illuminated island.
Day 3Bohinj — lake, waterfall and Vogel
Onward to Bohinj
Hotel check-in
Church of Sv. Janez and stone bridge in Ribčev Laz
At the lake's outflow stands the Gothic Church of St John with 14th-century frescoes, with the old stone arch bridge in front and a view over the whole of Lake Bohinj.
Path along the north shore of Lake Bohinj
This shady path beneath beech trees runs west from the little church along the water, with pebble coves where you can dip into the cold glacial water.
Savica waterfall
From the car park in Ukanc you climb 553 steps to the viewing platform, from which the A-shaped Slap Savica shoots 78 metres out of the rock face.
Vogel cable car
The gondola takes you up to 1535 metres in four minutes, where the lake opens up far below and, opposite, the face of Triglav and the Julian Alps.
Evening: lakeshore at Ukanc
At the western end of the lake the water turns mirror-smooth in the evening, and from the meadow at Ukanc you see the last sun on the peaks above the valley.
Day 4Over the Vršič into the Soča valley
Onward to Bovec
Hotel check-in
Velika Korita of the Soča
Near Lepena the river has carved a gorge 750 metres long and up to 15 metres deep into the limestone; from the suspension bridge you see the water glowing turquoise inside.
Kluže Fortress in the Koritnica valley
The Austro-Hungarian barrier fort clings above a narrow gorge, and its casemates tell the story of the Isonzo Front of 1915.
Boka waterfall viewpoint
From the car park on the road to Žaga you look across the bridge at Slovenia's mightiest waterfall, which drops 106 metres freely from the rock face.
Evening: Bovec village square
In the evening, Trg golobarskih žrtev is the meeting point for rafting guides and paragliders, with terraces around the Church of Sv. Urh.
Day 5Kobarid, the Isonzo Front and the Tolmin Gorges
Onward to Kobarid
Hotel check-in
Kobarid Museum
The award-winning war museum uses relief maps, photos and finds to show how half a million soldiers fought on this front in 1917.
Napoleon Bridge and Kozjak waterfall
From the stone arch over the Soča, a half-hour path leads to a rocky hall in which the Kozjak plunges 15 metres into a round turquoise pool.
Tolmin Gorges
At the lowest point of the national park, the Tolminka and Zadlaščica meet; the Bear's Head rock is wedged above the gorge and the Devil's Bridge hangs 60 metres above the water.
Javorca Memorial Church
This wooden church on the mountainside was built in 1916 by Austro-Hungarian soldiers; inside, the names of 2564 fallen are listed on hinged wooden panels.
Evening: Italian Ossuary above Kobarid
From Gradič hill, three terraces holding the remains of 7014 Italian soldiers lead up to the Church of Sv. Anton, and from the top the whole valley lies in the evening light.
Day 6Kolovrat and farewell to the Soča valley
Drežnica village and the Church of the Sacred Heart
This mountain village above Kobarid lies beneath the face of Krn, and its red-roofed church is one of the most photographed sights in the upper Soča valley.
Kolovrat open-air museum
On the border ridge with Italy, trenches, tunnels and gun emplacements of the Italian third line of defence can be explored, with views as far as the Adriatic.
