The route on the map
The plan, day by day
Day 1Arrival in Svolvær
Arrival in Svolvær
Hotel check-in
Your base is on Svolvær's harbour basin, where the ferry quays, the restaurants and the fishermen's cabins of Svinøya are all within walking distance.
Svinøya
The old trading island east of the harbour, with ochre-red rorbuer, wooden stockfish racks and a view back to the spikes of the Svolværgeita.
Day 2Svolvær & Kabelvåg
Fløya & Djevelporten
The climb up the Sherpa steps to Svolvær's local mountain, with the wedged boulder of Djevelporten at the top and a panoramic view over the Vestfjord.
Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum
A private collection by the Torget with uniforms, photos and documents on the German occupation and the British commando raid of 1941.
Vågan kirke in Kabelvåg
Northern Norway's largest wooden church, from 1898, built for 1200 people at a time when thousands of seasonal fishermen stayed in the village in winter.
Lofotmuseet in Storvågan
On the site of the oldest fishing village in Lofoten stand original rorbuer, the merchant's manor house and boats of the old Nordland jekts.
Evening: Torget in Svolvær
The waterside market square with benches, an ice-cream stand and mountain views, an evening meeting point for climbers and boat people.
Day 3Henningsvær, the Venice of Lofoten
Onward to Henningsvær
Hotel check-in
Dreyersgate in Henningsvær
The narrow main lane between quays and white wooden houses, lined with workshops, shops and the village's old fish quay.
KaviarFactory
Contemporary art in a former caviar factory right on the water, with changing exhibitions by Norwegian and international artists.
Henningsvær Fotballbane
The famous football pitch on bare rock between stockfish racks and the sea, with no stands, in the middle of nowhere.
Festvågtind
A short, steep climb just past the bridge, from which you see Henningsvær lying in the sea like a carpet of islands.
Evening: Henningsvær harbour basin
A loop around the inner basin, where boats lie moored and the quays stay light until late at night.
Day 4Vikings & white beaches on Vestvågøy
Onward to Leknes
Hotel check-in
Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg
Over the foundations of the largest known Viking house stands an 83-metre reconstruction with a hearth, looms and mead served.
Haukland beach
A crescent bay with turquoise water and white sand, framed by the steep slopes of Mannen.
Uttakleiv beach
Beyond the tunnel lies the rougher neighbouring beach, with smooth-worn rocks, seaweed and the much-photographed dragon's eye in the rock.
Evening: Ballstad fishing harbour
One of Lofoten's busiest fishing harbours, with a shipyard, stockfish racks and a red quayside building in the evening light.
Day 5Reine and the islands in the fjord
Onward to Reine
Hotel check-in
Reinebringen
1978 Nepalese-built stone steps lead in a good hour up to the ridge, from which Reine and the Reinefjord lie below you like a map.
Sakrisøy
A tiny island with ochre-yellow rorbuer, stockfish racks and the quirky doll museum right on the E10.
Hamnøy
The red fishermen's cabins beneath the rock face of Festhelltinden — seen from the bridge, the most photographed view in Lofoten.
Reine fishing village
A stroll across the village quays between boathouses, a gallery and the landing stage from which the little ferry sets off into the Reinefjord.
Evening: the Reinefjord in the midnight light
The shore path along the fjord, where in the late evening light the mountains turn pink and the water becomes mirror-smooth.
Day 6To the end of the road at Å
Norsk Fiskeværsmuseum in Å
In the last village on the E10, a cod-liver oil factory, smithy, boathouse and rorbuer show how a fishing village worked around 1900.
Lofoten Stockfish Museum
In an old warehouse, step by step, you learn how cod dries on the racks and is sorted and sold to Italy.
Sørvågen
The neighbouring village with the telegraph museum, which recalls the 1861 telegraph line between the fishing villages.
Kvalvika beach
From the car park near Fredvang, a path leads over a saddle down to a sandy bay that can only be reached on foot.
Evening: Sørvågen harbour in the evening light
A quiet quay at the end of the island where, in the evening, all that's left are gulls, boat engines and the light on the peaks.
Day 7Nusfjord, Ramberg and back
Nusfjord
One of Norway's oldest preserved fishing villages, in a narrow rocky cove with a general store, a bakery and a cod-liver oil factory.
Ramberg beach
A long white sandy beach right by the E10, where in the sunshine you can hardly believe you're north of the Arctic Circle.
Departure from Leknes
